Here are some of my favorite moments from my 21 years of teaching Pre-K - 12 grade art!
![]() Wax Resist Self-Portraits | ![]() Pre-K Self-PortraitsStudents look into a mirror to draw what they see and then paint over it with water color paint. Drawing from life is a skill every age artist needs to practice! | ![]() Second Grade Self-Portraits |

![]() Mural inspired by Faith RinggoldThis mural is inspired by Faith Ringgold's piece called "The Dinner Quilt". It was several lessons put together: self-portraits, point of view (perspective), quilting, storytelling, and art history. | ![]() 7th Grade Self-PortraitMy sample for a lesson on self-portraits in the style of Modigliani. Sometimes I use samples to try the project out first. If I do show a sample that I created I usually try to show more than one to demonstrate that there is more than one solution to the challenge. | ![]() 6th Grade Mona Lisa Self-PortraitsCraypa and water color were used to create these. The lesson was about perspective and art history. |

![]() Surrealist CollageMy sample for a lesson on surrealism using collage as a medium. | ![]() Action Painting! To experience the subject of action painting the students tap a ball that has been rolled in paint to each other. They can actually create a painting that records the action of the painting tool (ball- brushes are not the only painting tool!) | ![]() Student work based on Matisse |
![]() Mixed Media based on MatisseMatisse's interior paintings include a window which adds a feeling of depth as it suggests there is more beyond the room. (My sample) | ![]() Student work based on Matisse | ![]() In the style of Georgia O'KeefeStudents looked at artificial flowers while composing these paintings. I enlarged them using a projector. The students were then able to paint their drawings, only BIG! |
![]() Kindergarten MuralA single artist drew this and then, once it was enlarged, chose "assistants" to help paint it. The final painting was about 3' x 5'. | ![]() First Grade Mural | ![]() First Grade MuralThis one was made by one very ambitious and patient artist! |
